hummingbird in the house

there he was
skirking round the kitchen
I'd always wanted to see one up close,
but this, well this
this was just too much
watching as he repeatedly
bashed his little head, pointy beak
into the plane glass of the atrium door
I found myself talking to him,
"c'mon, c'mon honey", as I tried
to show him the door
I don't know who was more distressed
I almost thought i heard him cry
and my pleading only suceeded in summoning
the dog, who came bounding in
to see what the excitement was all about
as i shooed him out the door and onto the deck
the hummer must've made his escape
for when i went back in
he was gone
so quiet
hard to believe he was ever really there
