I almost thought i heard him cry

and my pleading only suceeded in summoning

to see what the excitement was all about

as i shooed him out the door and onto the deck

the hummer must've made his escape

for when i went back in

he was gone

Mother’s Day 5 AM

the memory of her, starting to fade

it's been 37 years

tho I can still conjour her dimples, her smile

the crinkles around her eyes

the small painting of her by my desk helps

her teased blond hair

I never did see her natural auburn hair

except in one picture of her

holding me when i was a baby

in the painting

she’s wearing a high neck leopard blouse

replacing the black she always wore

that i wear now

the sound of her voice

i’m no longer sure of

but I can almost see her laughing

but maybe she is just smiling

smiling at me,

from that painting of her by my desk

I remember her rubbing my back

as we lay together watching TV

on the plaid couch downstairs

in the finished basement

with the black speckled floor

I was seven trying on her shoes with no toes

later when i was a teenager, i would sneak into her room

to read the forbidden novels she kept

in the night table

I can see the bottle of Chanel #5

on her black japanese lacquered dresser

the scent alludes me now

My father's plant stand

I wonder who's house it's in now

what corner it's relegated to

Is it holding a plant

like intended?

but then It was intended for me

My father so proud of it

of how he had acquired it

I left it there in the apartment

When i flew down to get him

just bringing back what i could fit

in the empty suitcase

I brought him back to the apartment one last time

just so he could, what?

make sure i didn't leave anything important behind?

He didn't mention the plant stand then

or even look back as we left

even tho he must've known

he would never return

But there was nothing left, no one

I might have thought of that plant stand

once or twice before

but today walking through that store

with a ceramic pot for the one remaining plant

from the arrangement someone sent when he died

having just found the perfect terracotta, mexican clay pot

tastefully adorned that i would place under the mirror

on the glass table in the dining room

I saw the small plant table

black, plain wood

not ornately etched beautiful

like the one my father had bought

for my mother

and it hit me

how badly i wanted that plant stand now

Last patient of the morning
He was late

Grudingly I called him in

I wanted to go to lunch

Glancing at his new patient information

I zeroed in on Occupation- Marine Biologist

By the look on his face

I knew that we must be in trouble

"Awful bout the oil spill", I said

"Horrible", he replied

Shaking his head, looking down

He gave his awful prognosis

"It will affect the whole East Coast

The oil will raise the water temperature

Hurricanes will be stronger as a result"

I turned off the lights and proceeded to check his vision

hoping beyond hope that the vision
he had just painted was wrong

Finishing up his exam
Saddened and sickened by his news
I went off guiltily to eat my lunch

provided by one of the big drug companies

As the oil continues to gush

and images of those oil slicked pelicans

flicker on the TV screen

it seems too unimaginable, too unreal

as the days tick by with no solution

It appears all we can do is pray

pray to a G-d who may not be able to listen
